For
over 20 years we have spent time on Sanibel. First for only a week because I was
an elementary school librarian and we only had Christmas week and a week in
February available. Later we could stay
a month, then two and more. Every year we biked and walked Ding Darling and
rode through the reserve twice a day to see the birds and animals. When I saw
an article in the Sanibel weekly newspaper about a memorial for a crocodile I
was inspired to see how this lovely island cares for animals. Although I have
published professional books and articles for librarians, the joy and respect
that was celebrated at that memorial service led me to write my first
children's book. I have shared picture books with elementary school children
for over 25 years. The story of Sanibel's determined crocodile would help young
students understand people's love and respect for animals. Another wonderful
thing happened. I was lucky enough to find Randon Eddy,
a fantastic artist. Her beautiful illustrations enhanced the
story tenfold.
